Philippine Spotted Deer
Philippine spotted deer are one of the rarest deer species in the world and are known for their shy and elusive nature. Native to the forests of the central Philippines, they are most active during the evening and night, making sightings especially rewarding for visitors.
Their dark brown coats, marked with pale spots along the back, provide excellent camouflage amongst dense forest vegetation. Males can be recognised by their distinctive antlers, which feature three pointed tines.
In the wild, Philippine spotted deer face serious threats from habitat loss and illegal hunting, leading to a significant decline in their population. Conservation breeding programmes and protected habitats are helping to support the future of this endangered species and raise awareness of the importance of wildlife conservation.
