Southern White Rhino

Southern white rhinos are among the largest land mammals in the world, recognised for their immense size, powerful build, and distinctive two-horned appearance. Despite their strength, they are often calm animals and can frequently be seen grazing peacefully across their habitat.

These impressive animals spend much of their day feeding, resting, or cooling off in mud wallows, which help to protect their skin from the heat and insects. Females are often seen together with their calves, while males are usually more solitary and territorial.

Although southern white rhino populations have recovered in some areas thanks to conservation efforts, they continue to face serious threats from poaching and habitat loss. Wildlife parks and conservation programmes play an important role in helping to safeguard the future of this remarkable species.
