Common Ostrich

Common ostriches are the largest and heaviest birds in the world, instantly recognisable for their long legs, powerful build, and remarkable speed. Despite being flightless, they are incredibly fast runners and can reach speeds of over 40 miles per hour, making them well adapted to life on the open plains.

These impressive birds have large eyes—bigger than their brains—which give them excellent vision to spot predators from a distance. Males are typically black and white, while females are a more camouflaged brown, helping them blend into their surroundings.

Common ostriches are found across various African countries, where they roam open savannahs and semi-arid landscapes. As omnivores, they eat a wide range of foods but mainly graze on plant material, using their adaptability to survive in challenging environments.
