Red Panda

Red pandas are charming, tree-dwelling mammals known for their reddish-brown fur, bushy tails, and playful behaviour. Despite their name, they are not closely related to giant pandas, and are in fact the original animals to be called “pandas” before giant pandas were named.

These small, cat-sized creatures are expertly adapted for life in the trees, using their strong claws and balancing tails to move easily through forest canopies. Their thick fur helps them stay warm in cooler mountain habitats, and they often wrap their fluffy tails around themselves for extra insulation.

At Red Panda Retreat on the Discovery Trail, visitors can watch these adorable animals exploring their enriching habitat, which includes trees, climbing structures, nesting boxes, and plenty of bamboo. They also have access to an air-conditioned indoor den and 24-hour choice of indoor or outdoor spaces, ensuring their comfort all year round.

Red pandas are currently classified as endangered due to habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade. Conservation efforts, including support for organisations such as the Red Panda Network, play an important role in protecting wild populations and the forests they depend on.
