California Sea Lion
California sea lions are highly intelligent and social marine mammals belonging to the pinniped group, which also includes seals and walruses. Adapted for life in the water, they have streamlined bodies and powerful flippers that make them agile and fast swimmers.
These animals are easily recognised by their external earflaps and playful, curious nature, often gathering in groups known as rafts when they are in the water. A thick layer of blubber helps keep them warm, while their adaptability and intelligence make them excellent hunters of fish and squid across their coastal range.
At the Safari Park, visitors can also enjoy a specially designed California sea lion show in the Discovery Trail theatre. During these daily sessions, lasting around 15 minutes, guests can watch these remarkable animals demonstrate their agility, playfulness, and intelligence, while keepers share insights into their behaviour and training.
